To the woods!
The Garden is set in an acre of secure, privately owned land in the heart of St Werburghs. The site is mainly woodland and has been planted for biodiversity, so is a very rich environment. The children are free to explore this wild but safe space and are making it their own with a treehouse and various dens.
For indoor space there is a large yurt on a raised platform, with a stove to keep it warm and cosy in the winter. Inside is where meetings, games and other activities are held and where children's belongings, craft materials and other resources are stored. There are various cosy and functional spaces within the yurt.
In the open meadow area next to the yurt is a permanent fire pit, picnic bench, compost loo and handwashing station.
We're lucky to benefit from not one but two ponds. One of these ponds in particular is rich is wildlife, including frogs, newts, mayflies and dragonflies. The other has been colonised by the children for wild swimming and experiments, usually involving sticks.
A greenhouse and several raised vegetable beds are used for growing food and the children have lots of opportunity to get involved in this.
We have further plans to build a sustainable, workshop area, outdoor kitchen and other facilities in collaboration with the children at The Garden.
